How to Make Your Wedding Bouquet More Unique

Recently, someone asked me where she could find flowers to make her wedding bouquet more unique and stand out.

I completely understand the question. We all want to create unique bouquets that feel a little different from everyone else’s and catch people’s attention.

The easiest answer might be, “Use unique flowers or materials.” But those can be very expensive, and sometimes you have to buy large quantities online just to get them.

But then I started thinking…

What is a “unique” flower, anyway?

The answer really depends on where you live.

The flowers that are common in your area may be rare and exciting to someone in another part of the world. For me, many tropical flowers, or flowers I used all the time in Japan, like Sandersonia which are expensive to obtain in my area, and many varieties simply aren’t available.

On the other hand, flowers I see every day at my local flower market or growing in my garden may seem special to someone else.

In fact, I’ve had florists from other regions tell me, “You have such unique flowers!” I was surprised because they were simply flowers from my garden or local flower market that are very common to me.

That made me realize that you don’t necessarily need rare flowers to create a unique bouquet.

To me, it’s about the quality of the flowers and the quality of the design.

Choose flowers in the best condition. Condition them properly. Let them open to the right stage. Clean the stems.

When you design, keep your workspace clean and take care of your tools. I also find that having a calm, positive mindset and taking a moment to appreciate the flowers in front of you can make the creative process much more enjoyable.

Then design in a way that reflects your own style.

Maybe you’re drawn to loose, airy bouquets in soft pastel colors.

Or perhaps you love bold, modern designs with vibrant colors using grouping.

You don’t have to search far for something unusual. Use what is available to you from your local wholesaler, flower market, flower farm, garden center, or even your own garden.

Instead of spending a lot of time and money searching for “special” flowers from somewhere else, try looking at the flowers you already have in a different way.

Pay attention to their shape, movement, texture, color, and condition. Experiment with how you place them and how you combine them.

And honestly, I’m still learning and discovering my own style, too.

So don’t worry too much about whether other people will think your bouquet is unique. Start with what you find beautiful and what feels right to you.

Trust your eye, enjoy the process, and keep discovering what feels like you. I believe that’s what makes your wedding bouquet truly unique!
