We still have a little chill in the mornings, the steam that warms the morning air feels especially serene-a perfect setting for my cherished matcha ritual. Every morning, as part of my daily self-care routine, I make my way to the kitchen, eager to begin the day with intention and mindfulness. For me, that first warm drink of the day is always matcha.
As I listen to the gentle sound of water boiling, I take a moment to prepare seasonal fruits for breakfast. This small act of self-care–choosing fresh, vibrant fruits over the usual wagashi (Japanese sweets) –feels both nourishing and refreshing. The natural sweetness of the fruit balances the sharp bitterness of the matcha, allowing the deep umami flavor to shine through. It is a delightful harmony that never fails to uplift my morning.
The heart of my matcha ritual lies in the process of whisking the tea. As I pick up the chasen (bamboo whisk) and begin to blend the matcha powder with hot water, the fragrant aroma fills the air, inviting a deep, calming breath. Even the steam rising gently from the bowl feels like a part of this intimate moment of self-care.
In just a few minutes, this simple yet profound matcha ritual transforms into a deeply satisfying experience. It is not only about the tea, but also creating a moment of peace and grounding to start my day. This daily practice enhances mindfulness, supports productivity, and reminds me to care for myself, no matter how busy life gets. During both good times and challenging ones, my morning matcha ritual has remained a constant source of comfort and nourishment.
1. Pour hot water into the tea bowl to warm it, then discard the water.
2. Place 1.5-2.0 g of matcha in a tea bowl
3. Pour about 70cc of hot water into the bowl.
4. Whisk with a bamboo whisk (chasen) until frothy.
5. Enjoy!
For a more indulgent twist, add a little extra matcha powder along with your favorite milk and a touch of sweetener to create a creamy matcha latte. This variation will add a luxurious feel to your matcha ritual, turning it into an even more delightful act of self-care.
This daily matcha ritual has taught me that even the busiest mornings still hold space for a moment of connection and mindfulness. Whether shared with loved ones or enjoyed in peaceful solitude, a cup of matcha offers more than just warmth, acting as a symbol of balance, harmony, and gratitude. My morning matcha ritual is a gentle reminder to embrace life’s fleeting joys and prioritize the small, meaningful moments of self-care that nourish both the body and soul.
