It’s been quite cold here in January, and I often find myself wanting to snuggle in front of our fireplace forever. However, it’s a great time to learn new skills or improve existing ones through practice!
Whether you’re a seasonal wedding florist, farmer-florist, or simply a flower enthusiast, you might have limited resources to obtain flowers or need only a few stems of each variety to practice.
In this and next posts, I’m sharing two flower recipes using blooms from Trader Joe’s grocery store: one is a loose and airy garden-style bouquet, and the other is a cascading bouquet. To create both bouquets, I’ll be using our bouquet-making tool, the “StemSlider,” but of course, you can make these with your hands using spiral or non-spiral methods!

Tips and Tricks
1. Remove Alstroemeria Leaves: I removed all the leaves from the alstroemerias, as the leaves are not very attractive and the flowers look better without them.
2. Select a Variety of Flower Types: Choose at least three different categories of flowers—primary flowers, secondary flowers, and filler flowers—and add line flowers to give more dimension to the bouquet. Here, I used roses as primary flowers, tulips and calla lilies as secondary flowers, alstroemerias and hypericums as fillers, and veronicas and eucalyptus as line flowers.
When practicing bouquet making, you don’t need special flowers, as they can be pricey. Fresh flowers from places like Trader Joe’s can be both economical and effective, and they offers a variety of flowers at budget-friendly prices, making it a convenient option for sourcing practice materials.
More importantly, focus on building bouquets in your style and gaining confidence through repeated practice. Even simple flowers can look lovely when arranged thoughtfully!
